Links Not Working on Mobile

We know there are issues with the links on mobile for some folks. We've tried to contact the admins on it, but haven't gotten anywhere with them. It seems to be an issue with their deep linking as best we can tell. If you want to find a game thread and cannot use the links here, go to CFB_Referee's user page and they'll all be there too.

Important Notes

Once a full week concludes or when enough have accumulated, we'll move thread links to the bottom of the page so you'll still be able to use it to find old threads, but the current week will be at the top!

Q&A

Why does CFB_Referee get all the bowl game threads?
Because this season we have had some problems with people deleting threads and because of the size of our sub and threads we need more split game threads.
What are these threads?
The threads listed here are ones posted by CFB_Referee or the mod team. You'll notice not all of the FCS playoff games are here - those threads are still available to grab as normal in the game thread generator.
What time zone are we in?
Eastern. At least CFB_Referee is. So that's the time zone for the threads.
BUT WHY DO WE NEED HALVES IN THREADS?
Simply put, the mod team and many users start to have problems with threads lagging or not working at all once we get past 10,000 comments. It isn't that Reddit shuts down the thread at that point, just that the threads become much harder to use at the rapid pace of a game thread. Yes, your system may be able to handle it, but a lot of people's cannot.
The dark times of the offseason begin.

2020 NFL Draft Review FINAL - AFC West + links to all divisions - Analysis and Career Predictions for Each Team's Draft Class

The AFC West is the final division in the 2020 NFL Draft review series. Catch up on the other installments of this 2020 NFL Draft review series with the NFC West, AFC South, NFC South, AFC East, NFC East, AFC North, and NFC North.
Every year after the draft, I write a way-too-long review of each team’s draft. The purpose of this draft review is to give predictions for the careers of each team’s drafted players. I’ve watched film of each player I’m commenting on. Draft grades are overly optimistic and unrealistic. Unlike the majority of post-draft coverage out there, I will pick busts. Keep in mind that 23.4% of all first-round picks bust.
Let me preface this by saying: predicting the career of an NFL draft pick is a ridiculous exercise. There is so much unknown that goes into whether a player succeeds or fails at the next level. I can make educated guesses based on team situation, supporting cast, and research about the prospect’s character and work ethic, but there’s a reason teams make so many mistakes every year. You simply don’t know for sure how a player will react to being a pro. Injuries are also a huge factor in the fate of a player and impossible to predict accurately. Nevertheless, this is a fun exercise and gives us a chance to review how each team approached the draft.

Overview

Before we start, here are some of my general thoughts on the 2020 NFL Draft.
Quickly on the broadcast - they did a great job given the circumstances. The production quality was great and they did more actual analysis than usual. My main gripe with draft coverage every year is that they don’t show incredible highlights (they somehow didn’t show the Aaron Dobson catch in 2013). This year, they showed more footage of actual football and I appreciated that. The only two negatives for me were the constant tragic stories and Booger McFarland.
Oh, and if any poor soul bet on Justin Jefferson Under 21.5 draft position, ESPN should apologize to you. They showed him on the phone celebrating right before cutting to Goodell announcing the 21st pick - Jalen Reagor to the Eagles. Jefferson was of course on the phone with the Vikings, who took him at 22. Brutal beat.
As for the draft, remember this tweet about mock drafts being “wronger” than ever? Funny, this was probably the chalkiest first-round ever in the internet age. Nothing was truly shocking to me, including the Packers trading up for Jordan Love (more on that here). I had Damon Arnette in the first round in my first mock draft this draft season. I wrote an article lauding Jordyn Brooks as an undervalued commodity. Noah Ibinoghene going in the first was surprising, I suppose. But there was no Clelin Ferrell at No. 4 or Tyson Alualu at No. 10. It speaks to how the media and internet scouts might be catching up to, or God forbid actually influencing the teams.
So here is the next installment of my annual draft review. Each player will receive their career prediction in parentheses following their name. For example: Joe Burrow (5). Here's how the picks break down:
5 – All-Pro: Starter who has performed at an elite level at his position. 4 – Above-Average: Starter who has been among the best at his position. 3 – Solid: Starter or valuable back-up with significant positive production. 2 – Replacement Level: Below-average starter or back-up who made minor contributions. 1 – Bust: Player who didn’t amount to anything positive.
Next up, the AFC West.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders came into the draft with needs at wide receiver and cornerback. They wasted no time addressing those positions and ended up taking two corners and two-and-a-half wide receivers total. I think they aced this draft, but not for the reasons you might think.
Las Vegas opted for speed over production by selecting Henry Ruggs III (3) as the first receiver off the board. Ruggs played a supporting role alongside lead dog Jerry Jeudy at Alabama, but ran a 4.28 at the combine and aced the draft process. His speed popped on film, as he routinely cribbed slants and ran by people in the SEC. Ruggs was lauded for his competitiveness and edge, particularly as a blocker, which directly conflicts with my notes of his film. I noted missed blocks, him getting tossed, and labeled him as “weak.” Perhaps I watched the wrong games or my standards are too high.
As far as receiving the football, Ruggs was fantastic, making highlight diving catches and using his hops to climb the later and show off his above-average hands. There are two major unknowns with Ruggs - how he will deal with being the No. 1 option, and how he will develop as a route-runner. Unfortunately, I do not believe he will live up to his physical attributes. Derek Carr ranked 25th in Air Yards Per Completion last year, and while accurate, has never excelled at utilizing a deep threat. I also have a hard time endorsing a player who was not the number one receiver on his own team to be the number one receiver in a loaded draft class.
At No. 19, the Raiders took Damon Arnette (3), which was a surprise to some. I had Arnette going in the first round in my first mock draft of the year and liked his film more than most. His skillset is that of a quality starting corner, despite unorthodox technique and tendencies. Arnette’s play was up-and-down at Ohio State, in part due to being thrown at so much. He showed weird stances and punches from all different angles and body alignments in press coverage, but generally got the job done.
At the NFL level, if unique individual technique is effective, coaches don’t care. Arnette is more comfortable in press than off and will give up the inside. Most importantly, he can get his head around defending vertical routes in man. He was competitive and alert on film, flying down in run support and showing the necessary swagger and short memory needed from a pro corner. He’s going to get beat, but I like his transition to the league as someone who’s been picked on a bit but kept getting better.
At No. 80, the Raiders took one of my favorite players in the draft in Lynn Bowden Jr (4). Lynn Bowden Jr. played quarterback and receiver at Kentucky and is most known for throwing a punch in a pre-game scuffle before the Belk Bowl. Bowden’s film is that of a grown man with an edge. His receiver film shows nothing in terms of advanced route-running, but his speed absolutely plays and his hands are good enough. His quarterback and returner film shows joystick moves in the open field and elusiveness that rivals Lamb and Shenault. I don’t know if he’s a pro wide receiver (neither do the Raiders), but I’ve seen too many converted quarterbacks have success to bet against his natural football traits. I expect Jon Gruden to use him all over the field and for him to be one of the most explosive swiss army-knife weapons of this generation.
📷
With the very next pick, the Raiders again took one of my favorite players in Bryan Edwards (4) of South Carolina. Edwards was the No. 15 overall player on my board so I obviously loved this pick. Aside from injury concerns and a few miscommunication issues working the boundary with his quarterback, Edwards’ film was outstanding. He’s technically sound with strong hands, tremendous contact balance, evidence of beating press, and great concentration skills. As a physical run-after-catch threat, he’s dynamic and strong. He is the prototype big-bodied NFL receiver in terms of traits, plucking the ball and transitioning as a runner smoothly. I predict he’ll be better than Ruggs. He just needs to get and stay healthy.
I think Tanner Muse (2) can be a special-teamer (tripping up J.K. Dobbins was a gigantic play in the National Semifinal), and John Simpson (3) was a steal. I love mauler guards who fall due to a lack of quickness. Simpson is physical and sometimes dominant in the run game. His stance gives away pass or run, but he can be coached and work on his body to develop into a starting guard.
The Raiders took yet another one of “my guys” in Amik Robertson (4) at pick No. 139. I had Robertson ranked 75th overall and featured him in this article. Robertson is tiny and his film isn’t without flaws, but I am always a proponent of taking players whose main knock is lack of size. I think Robertson will struggle with the brute size and strength of NFL football, and I actually don’t think he’s that fast (didn’t run a 40). But as far as being a pure football player and having coverage instincts and ball skills, Robertson is unbelievable.
Robertson plays big, talks a lot, and backs it up. He jacked up the 6-6 Collin Johnson at the line of scrimmage and almost mossed No. 16 on Texas. He’s able to match everything, has a smooth pedal, and gives up almost no separation in man. Slight jersey tug but disciplined hands play in the league. His production at the college level was unreal - 14 interceptions, 2 blocked kicks, 3 defensive touchdowns, and an onside kick return for a touchdown. I worry about his tackling, but I project him to be one of the best slot cover men in the league.
The Raiders chose to stick with Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota, despite having enough draft ammo to move around and take one of the quarterbacks. I loved what they did with most of their picks. Carr now has more weapons and zero excuses. This is a huge year for him.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers came into the draft with primary needs at quarterback and inside linebacker. They addressed those needs in the first round, selecting the No. 3 and No. 8 players on my board.
The madmen did it. They took Justin Herbert (4) at 6. After being inundated with negative Justin Herbert analysis, I went back for a second look at the former Oregon Duck. In terms of college performance, Herbert’s film is reminiscent of recent busts, including Mitchell Trubisky. He lacks ideal anticipation, inexplicably misses some throws, and wasn’t always trusted by his coaching staff. It is also fair to wonder about his transition, coming from a screen-heavy, spread system at Oregon.
However, evaluating NFL prospects is not just about college performance - it’s about projecting traits. Scouting quarterbacks is difficult, and there’s a reason so many teams miss. A lot of times teams fall in love with physical traits such as arm talent and are burned because the player struggles with the complexities, speed, and decision-making difficulty of the NFL game. I believe a critical look at Herbert’s film through the lens of traits-based scouting gets him to potential franchise quarterback level worthy of a high pick. Like with all prospects, his ultimate NFL fate will come down to a lot of surrounding and unknown factors such as situation, coaching, and intangibles. I will pick my No. 3 overall prospect to succeed. His traits are that of a franchise quarterback and his intelligence and athleticism will help his transition.
Arm talent, throwing on the run, short-level accuracy, ball handling, and mobility make Justin Herbert the complete package in terms of traits. He poorly placed just one throw under five yards in the games I watched. He has good footwork, touch, and excels with play-action. The translatable trait that makes me confident is his ability to look like the best player on the field in the face of pressure. Herbert can move around and deliver strikes on the run or simply use his legs as a weapon. He also showed the ability to go through full-field "rainbow" reads. Players with his running ability can afford to not be the most accurate passers in the world. He showed off his rushing skills in the Rose Bowl win against Wisconsin.
I understand the negatives, but with good coaching, I think Herbert can develop into a franchise quarterback as a mix between Josh Allen and Cam Newton.
📷
After selecting their quarterback at 6, the Chargers traded up for the best inside linebacker in the draft in Kenneth Murray (5). Murray had a productive and storied career at Oklahoma, displaying all the traits of a great pro off-ball linebacker for the Sooners. His speed and instincts make him a sideline to sideline threat, and he has the strength on contact of a thumper. His tackling technique is terrific, pointing to his ability to be coachable. He’s a little out of control at times, but he’s better than Devin White. The move up was worth it.
The Chargers want to bring Justin Herbert along slowly, and will look to make the playoffs with Tyrod Taylor as the starter. The surrounding talent is enough to take them there. With young stud defenders at all three levels, the Bolts just need to build an offensive line and add weaponry for Herbert to compete with the Chiefs in a few years.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos came into the draft with a clear plan - get Drew Lock some weapons. To say they achieved their goal would be an understatement. Their haul included my No. 7 overall player and my No. 1 tight end.
Jerry Jeudy (5) suffered from some prospect fatigue as analysts scrambled to poke holes in his game. While most of his success did come from the slot at Alabama, it’s not like his traits don’t translate to the outside. In Denver, Jeudy can man the slot primarily, whereas if he went to the Jets he may have had to learn an entirely new position. The only question about Jeudy is whether or not Drew Lock is good enough to allow him to reach his extremely high ceiling.
Jeudy has amazing quickness, length, and top-notch speed, but is known most for being an outstanding route-runner. He is the best route-runner I have ever scouted in college. He understands the nuances of changing speeds, is quick with a plan, and shows an uncommon ability to separate that surely translates to the pro game. He’ll be a star if Drew Lock proves to be competent.
📷
With their second pick, the Broncos doubled down on wide receiver with K.J. Hamler (2) of Penn State. Hamler is the prototypical deep threat and an excellent complement to Jeudy and Courtland Sutton in theory. He might be too small for the NFL, but his college film shows route-running ability on slot fades and out routes that rival most pros. His main weaknesses are due to his lack of size, as he struggles in contested catch situations and is dominated by strength in terms of ball security.
Hamler made a couple of tremendous sliding catches but does not display much in terms of hands an almost exclusively body-catcher. It’s a common misconception that receivers are never taught to catch with their body as coaches will teach it in certain situations. Hamler can succeed in the NFL, but there are too many mouths to feed in Denver for him to be more than a situational deep threat.
Michael Ojemudia (2) has the athletic profile and size to be a starter, but his film doesn’t show the natural football traits of a pro. He isn’t physical enough and doesn’t show great awareness in zone, letting receivers get behind him.
Lloyd Cushenberry (2) was one of the most overrated prospects in the draft. He’s a classic case of a decorated collegiate who gets overdrafted due to great character. He was beaten badly by the Texas nose tackle and generally lacks balance.
McTelvin Agim (1) was overdrafted as a former five-star recruit who didn’t dominate in the SEC. He has the size and tools to be a rotational defensive lineman, but plays too high and bends at the waist, losing leverage and balance too easily.
Denver's best pick after Jeudy was Albert Okwuegbunam (3). His size/hands mix is rare and his physical ability is special. After last season I thought he’d be a high pick, but he never seemed to put it together. He’s an instant red-zone threat as a project with huge upside.
The draft community is giving high praise to this Broncos class. I think they nailed their first pick but wasn’t overly impressed with the rest of the haul. Denver’s defense is loaded with talented veterans and a returning Bradley Chubb, so Drew Lock’s progress will be an intriguing storyline in the AFC Wild Card race.

Kansas City Chiefs

Congratulations to the Chiefs and their fans on winning the Super Bowl. The World Champs came into the draft without any pressing needs and selected three extremely talented young prospects with their first three picks.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire (4) is a perfect fit in Andy Reid’s offense. My No. 2 running back, CEH reminds me of Maurice Jones-Drew. His lack of height is a non-issue, if not a positive, as he gives defenders a small target on his way to eluding tacklers and making guys miss. He's short but sturdy. His film against Alabama was inspiring, breaking tackles and moving piles against defenders twice his size. His best trait is his ability as a receiver, showing advanced route-running skills and soft hands. He’s competitive, fiery, and tough.
While he didn’t quite excel against the Georgia pros, he’s going to have so much space with Patrick Mahomes it’s scary. His 4.6 40 shows a lack of ideal long speed, but his ten-yard split was among the best for running backs at the combine. Amazing fit, PPR fantasy points everywhere.
📷
Willie Gay Jr. (3) has very inconsistent film and character red flags. Andy Reid took a chance on Marcus Peters years ago, who has had a very good pro career. The Chiefs culture should keep Gay on the right track. His film in 2018 was better than 2019, as he had more splash plays and tackled better. In 2019, some of his film showed poor angles and undisciplined missed fits. His speed plays and if he puts in any work at all his floor is a talented special teamer. I think Reid gets the most out of him and he starts at linebacker as a rookie. The burst and pop when he hits people is impressive.
Lucas Niang (3) has a very ugly body, but I liked his film a lot. He has a small lower half and is fat up top, which teams usually don’t like. He can be effective and quick, and has functional strength and movement skills despite his odd shape. I had him at No. 39 on my big board and project him to be a starting right tackle whenever the Chiefs need one. Solid pick.
The Chiefs have the best player in the NFL and a good enough defense. They should be favored to win it all again. The main takeaway from this class is that Andy Reid running backs are fantasy gold and he just got one that fits his scheme perfectly.
That wraps up the 2020 draft review series. Thank you so much for reading. On to 2021!

Offseason Review: Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9/10) - May 19th, 2020

Offseason Review: Winnipeg Blue Bombers (11-7)

General

Congratulations Bombers!. After decades of failure and misery, your team is finally the Grey Cup Champion! And you did so by absolutely pummeling the best team in the league and Breaking the heart of your rivals at home. It was hard not to feel like something was different in the air this season for Winnipeg even after their perennial mid-season slump. The narrative, the explosive special teams, big play defense and powerhouse offense that beat the ever living snot out of most of the league in cold weather football, overcoming decade upon decade of disappointments and a season marred in injury and drama, this season was a testament to the will, loyalty and fortitude of the city Winnipeg. You're a hard city, a hard people and a hard ass football team and 2019 was finally YOUR YEAR.
I don't get caught up in the rivalry as much as my fellow Riders fans, probably because I'm not from the Prairies but one thing I've always respected the Bombers for is that they've been loveable losers as long as I've watched this game, much like my Riders. They were a franchise that felt like they were almost there, they were so close but they just couldn't get their shot. Usually because of Calgary or BC getting in the way of their lofty goals. But honestly, when Mike O'Shea became the head coach I remember sitting back and thinking that he was going to take this team to the Cup one day because he perfectly encapsulates the persistence and drive the Bombers have had historically, and beefing up on local Canadian talent was the right way to do it. While the QB situation has been forever a giant question mark for this franchise, the way that Mike O'Shea and Kyle Walters built this team from the ground up is the exact model you need to turn a franchise around. Year after year the Bombers snagged top free agents, Willie Jefferson, Andrew Harris, Adam Bighill, Stanley Bryant and Justin Medlock to name a few. The scouting department, development and coaching stability that took years to perfect had finally started to hit as the Bombers saw big play from developmental pieces like Craig Roh, Drake Nevis, Brandon Alexander, Darvin Adams, JaMarcus Hardrick, Marcus Sayles and Chris Streveler. All these guys took time, they learned and bought into the system. If there is one thing that has set the Bombers apart from other teams as of late it is the heart and drive that this team has earned over many years of struggle and frankly, I can see them repeating. I am usually terrible with predictions but I feel like Mike O'Shea is going to get a statue someday lol. Now with all that praise out of the way, allow me to take a deep dive into the Bombers Grey Cup Winning 2019 season.

2019 Season

The Bombers were a battle-hardened and determined team right out of the gates to start the season. With close win, hard fought wins against BC and Edmonton to start the season and then absolute annihilation of the Redblacks and Argos, it started to look like this was going to be a season for the ages in Winnipeg. The efficient and high scoring offense led by Matt Nichols got the season started off on the right foot with a creative mix of play action passing and dominant running, the Bombers offence began to look elite on top of having an already elite defense helmed by reigning DMOP Adam Bighill and the incredible Willie Jefferson. For the next couple of weeks the Bombers struggled offensively against Hamilton and then defensively against the Argonauts of all teams with the Argos winning in the dire last seconds of the game after McBLT tore through that secondary like it was pantyhose on prom night. In week 9 the Bombers picked up a huge win against a Calgary team that had historically had the team’s number in the last few years. It was looking up; this was indeed a different Bombers team despite the couple of losses and they were the clear favourite to win the west.
Then, the bombers be bomberin’ curse struck and the team unfortunately lost Matt Nichols to a season long injury in the last quarter of the BC game in week 10, a game in which the bombers were up big. I'm harder on Nichols than most, but when you get down to it he was the most efficient QB in the league by far last season until his injury, and he finally showed me last year that he can win games himself. Imagine being a Bombers fan, your team looks fucking amazing for the first time in a long time, there's shutdown defense and high scoring offense with a QB that’s not shitty at the helm and then THIS happens. I honestly remember feeling sick for the fans because I think everyone wrote them off at this point. And if it wasn't the Nichols injury that did it, it was Andrew Harris testing positive for an illegal substance for two games after the win in Edmonton HEADING into labour day. But I will give the team credit, they almost beat the Riders in a rare labour day win at Mosaic and then beat the snot out of them next week in the Banjo Bowl. I will admit that the Banjo Bowl is usually a random fucking crapshoot but to go out there without two of your leaders and put up a big fight spoke a lot about the tenacity of this team. And unfortunately for the Bombers this is when the patented Mike O'Shea mid to end season slump came out and the Bombers dropped 4 of their last 6 to finish 3rd in the West. What was scary for the Bombers in this time was the back to back road playoff games against Calgary (who is normally a November machine) and Saskatchewan one of the hardest places in Canada to play.
Calgary and Winnipeg had a much different relationship this season. Before it felt like the older brother bullying the younger brother but as the years went and the younger brother aged and earned some experience, the older brother was not as tough anymore. The Bombers won the season series against the Stamps and then marched into McMahon and kicked some horseass! It was beautiful, the run game could not be stopped but the defense OH MY GOD forced Bo into the worst game of his career. I cannot remember the last time I saw Calgary dominated like that and the Bombers were the superior team and PROVED it. Out of the frying pan and into the fryer for the Bombers as they were set to face the red-hot Riders at Mosaic and here's where my favourite storyline of 2019 comes into play. Zach Collaros isn't injury prone by definition, but he has had a dangerous amount of concussions and while starting the season for the Riders he was taken out by a dirty headshot from Simoni Lawrence in week 1 and his playing career was left in doubt. In the middle of the season the Riders let him go to the Argonauts to play but with McBLT and the injury concern he never played a snap for the double blue. Then at the trade deadline, the Bombers made the move to add Collaros with hopes that he could perform as well as Nichols and while it was a learning process and a balance between him and Chris Streveler on top of the amazing ingenuity of Paul LaPolice, the Bombers made it work. The difference Collaros had in the pocket cannot be overstated. He was patient, accurate and diagnostic as the figurehead of the offence and no other game showed this better than the win in Semi Final against his former team at home. While I attribute the Bombers victory more to special teams and frankly dumb luck, Collaros' presence in the pocket was monumental to the team’s playoff success.
To be the best you have to beat the best, and the Bombers playoff path included knocking out the 3rd and 2nd placed team in the league leaving them with none other than the juggernaut Hamilton Tiger-Cats who, along with Winnipeg shared decades of drought. It was a better title bout than anyone could have imagined, two hungry teams vying for their first cup win in more than 20 years. The truth of the game was that one team was infinitely hungrier than the other and right from the get-go the Bombers outright dominated the Tiger-Cats. The defense could not stop Andrew Harris and the offensive line and the offensive line and Dane Evans were borderline useless against the volatile Winnipeg defense and Willie Jefferson. The Bombers had the game over by the 3rd quarter and enjoyed a historical playoff run for the ages on the shoulders of Andrew Harris who was named the Grey Cup MOP. It was indeed a season for the ages for Bombers fans and personally if I was happy a team not named Calgary had to win the cup, I was glad it was the Bombers. It is funny, coming into 2019 I predicted a Hamilton v Winnipeg Cup with the hopes of Winnipeg winning so the incessant whining would stop. Now that they are on top and rubbing it in everyone’s faces, I wish for another 30-year drought ;)
Just kidding of course. But 2020 is a new season so dial back please I beg you

Offence

Coming into 2019 it was going to be obvious, barring catastrophe, that this offence was going to be ground and pound mostly with the occasional play action bomb. And yeah that didn't change much but it didn't need to, the Bombers finished the season as the best running team in the league rushing for 147.9 yards a game and NOTHING makes me hornier than awesome, zone blocking in the run game. The Bombers have the best tackle duo in the league in Jamarcus Hardrick and Stanley Bryant, the best RB in the league in Andrew Harris and enough effective and speedy weapons to make the passing game dangerous like Darvin Adams, Nic Demski and Lucky Whitehead. Still felt like the Bombers offence was a little bit one dimensional but Matt Nichols was a motivated QB last season and the most efficient QB in the league until his unfortunate injury in week 10. The offence after that became ridiculously saturated with running the ball be it Andrew Harris or Chris Streveler. It was a model that worked true but once they fought a defense that’s good against the run like Saskatchewan, it was hard for the offense to overcome them and the team became incredibly reliant on defense and special teams to close the season. Then, Zach Collaros came in and turned this offense around. With a true passer at the helm, Paul LaPolice could run an offense that confused the fuck out of a defense and what I mean by this is that opponents had no idea where the ball was going. Here were the options: into the hands of your dominant runningback on the inside and between the tackles, jet sweep to the fast and elusive Nic Demski or Lucky Whitehead, wildcat pitch or straight up bootleg from Chris Streveler or a mid to deep Play action bomb to Darvin Adams or whoever else. What was once a one-dimensional offense becoming an absolute machine and in cold weather ball the Winnipeg offense began to dominate on the ground giving them the flexibility to open the passing game up. The way Paul LaPolice established the offense to end the season was masterful and it took pressure off of a defense that was close to getting taxed, and for those of you that don't know this is a huge praise from me as a notorious LaPolice critic.
The Bombers were statistically a top offense and here is how they rank in the following categories:
All in all the Bombers had issues offensively, mostly converting the ball and the passing attack but overall this was an explosive, exciting and exhilarating offense that won the cup so who cares.

Defence

Defensively the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were an intriguing team. If you looked purely at the stat sheet, you'd see that they allowed a lot of points and yards, but what that doesn't consider is the pure explosiveness of this defense in both the pass rush and turnovers. And here is where I write my love letter for Willie Jefferson the DPOY for 2019. The man is unbelievable, his pure athleticism allows him to bend a lineman over like a honeymoon bride and on top of that he's a clutch performer often coming up with a huge strip sack or even interception that gets the ball back to his awesome in crucial moments. We saw this in the Grey Cup. I haven't seen a defensive lineman DOMINATE like that since John Chick did in '13 and aside from that Drake Nevis had the best year stopping the run I've ever seen from a defensive tackle in this league. Think about this: The Bombers allowed 64.2 rushing yards a game. A GAME. Fucking Calgary barely ran the ball last season and still had a 71.3 yards per game average running the damn ball. Supplement this with the best rotational defensive lineman in the league in Craig Roh, Jackson Jeffcoat and John Kongbo (who by the way is Jefferson 2.0) and a great passrushing performance from Jake Thomas, I would crown them as the league’s best defensive line despite 3 teams having higher sack counts. As far as it goes for the linebackers, Adam Bighill had a down year due to likely playing injured. But I think Kyrie Wilson proved himself a capable starter and efficient tackler while Anthony Gaitor was frankly one of the best SAM backers in the league before he quit on the team. The part of contention for Bombers fans is the team’s secondary who allowed a lot of big plays, yards and honestly kind of blew some games. I don't attribute this to any of the starters, Winston Rose was the second-best CB in the league and Sayles, Alexander and Jones were all more than capable defenders. But I think Richie Hall's scheme lies to blame here and for most of the season the Bombers flat out could not defend the seams and outside the numbers, especially after the half. I've known Richie Hall as a defensive coordinator for a decade now and what I hate about his schemes is that he rarely adjusts the secondary at the half and the defenders can get stuck on an island without help, and I would say this is largely due to his secondary needing elite safety play. In Saskatchewan we had James Patrick and Tyrone Brackenridge and while Jeff Hecht was a savvy vet, he was also slow as a stone. When the Bombers moved Alexander and Jones to the safety position this secondary changed and began to capitalize on zone coverages forcing the most knockdowns and second most interceptions. To any Bomber fan complaining about the defense REMIND them that the Bombers have had the last two defensive MOP's and consistently a top 3 D.
The Bombers were statistically a top defense and here is how they rank in the following categories
The Bombers had an elite and explosive defense with occasional struggle in the passing game but I suspect them to get better in that front when the young secondary talent develops more.

Special Teams

The Blue Bombers special teams were easily the most exciting I have seen in a long time. When you have a kicker like Medlock you know what you're going to get as the team was both top 4 in punting and field goals, but where the Bombers made their mark on the teams was returning the ball and cover teams. First off, Janarion Grant AND Lucky Whitehead is an unfair duo and the 5 return touchdowns indicate that. But I truly think that the Bombers cover teams were among the best of all time, they lead the league in opp. starts, lead the league in blocked kicks and also had the two best aces in football last season with Mike Miller and Kerfalla-Emmanuel Exume tying for the league lead at 25 tackles.
Statistically the Bombers backed up my claims. They were:
Every week I feel psychotic for rambling on about special times but the Bombers special teams in 2019 were a major reason why the team won the cup. INVEST IN YOUR SPECIAL TEAMS PEOPLE

Coaching

I think the best way to understand Mike O'Shea is ironically compare him to Jason Maas since both coaches have had similar arcs. Both are former players taking over head coaching duties for historical franchise, both coaches have had access to a plethora of talent with some of the best scouting departments and big name free agent acquisitions and both coaches have had season start out fine and end in disaster. The difference between Mike O'Shea and Jason Maas is leadership and O'Shea is the ultimate players coach and his leadership and motivation as well as his ambition to win bleeds through the team while Maas's lack of discipline and ingenuity lead to some wasted seasons in Edmonton. Mike O'Shea is a team builder and his perseverance has been on show for the seven years he has been HC of this franchise despite it taking a while to take off. His teams have always had heart and his mastery over special teams and loyalty to both player and coach is a difference maker in this league. This team just does not give up and if it wasn't for Dave Dickenson existing and Khari Jones basically rebuilding the Als in one year flat I would say he was the most deserving of coach of the year. I think 2020 is going to be a huge test for him with Paul LaPolice leaving and I am fascinated by how this team evolves.
Buck Pierce takes over for the new Ottawa Redblacks HC Paul LaPolice and like Ryan Dinwiddie he's been waiting for his opportunity. Pierce has been instrumental into the yearly development of Matt Nichols because when Nichols started in Edmonton, he didn’t have the ability to diagnose a defense and often got rattled easy under pressure. While I'm no expert on quarterbacking, trying to undo some poor fundamentals in an older QB is probably the most challenging thing for a QB couch and Nichols in 2019 was a brutally efficient passer that just straight up didn't make that many mistakes which was a far cry from years past. Despite Nichols being gone and Streveler never being a real passer, Zach Collaros in my opinion is the perfect QB for Buck to lean on and I am hoping that the Bombers begin to lean into the pass game a little bit heavier. Obviously the run game works, but Andrew Harris is going to be 34 and I think the natural progression of this offense would be to lean off him a little bet and keep his legs fresh for the playoffs where he really does damage. Would love to see Darvin Adams and Wolitarsky get more involved in this offense and I think Pierce is capable of that.
Richie Hall is a figure of contention for Bombers fans just as he was for Riders fans and anybody that’s had to watch a bend but do not break defense. I think he’s got some of the most personnel dependent schemes in the league and it gets him into trouble as I stated in my defense write up, but when this defense is hot its barely unstoppable. I credit most of the Bombers defensive success to individual performances and positional coaching, however it’s impossible to not give Hall credit for this defense especially in the run game and turnovers. I am also giving him a huge pass for last season because he was a man that went through tragedy last year. I do not think he's nearly as bad as people say, but I'd like to see him delegate some play calling duties sometime and work on some of his zone coverages.
Marty Costello's offensive lines are consistently among the league’s best in terms of zone blocking and rushing attack. In fact, he is by far the best run game coach in the league and the dominance and athleticism of this oline in the run game is unparalleled. Geoff Gray and Drew Desjarlais were both greenhorns coming into the season and both players turned into capable starters. This line can be suspect against the pass rush sometimes but ultimately, he's transformed this group into a dominant offensive line which is a far cry from the Bombers lines of old. Just ask Buck Pierce.
Finally Glen Young must be one of the best defensive line and linebacking coaches in the league. I am not even going to bring up the star players, the rotational guys on the defense were phenomenal last year and I particularly admire his work with the edge players. The defensive line is forever in good hands so long as Young is coach.

DL Drake Nevis DB Josh Johnson OL Stanley Bryant
QB Matt Nichols QB Zach Collaros
DE Craig Roh OL Michael Couture
OL JeMarcus Hardrick
DE Willie Jefferson
DB Mercy Maston
WR Charles Nelson
OL Patrick Neufeld
DB Nicholas Taylor
DL Jake Thomas
WR Drew Wolitarsky
You can mourn the losses of Drake Nevis and Craig Roh who were big defensive pieces, and now the QB situation is a little hazy with Matt Nichols and Chris Streveler leaving with no experienced QB backing up Collaros, but overall oh my god what an offseason the Bombers had. The Bombers literally re-signed 4 of their 5 starting offensive lineman as well as receiving talent such as Darvin Adams and Drew Wolitarsky; but for Pete’s sake they also re-signed Willie Jefferson and signed Tobi Antigha (another athletic end) and Micah Awe one of the best up and comers in the league. This team is in good hands for at least a couple years.

2020 Outlook

The Bombers are primed to make another run at the Cup but one thing concerns me and that is the health of Zach Collaros. I think Collaros can take this team to new places on the offensive side of the ball and defensively this team should be more or less better than last year, maybe a little bit worse in the run game but I mean fuck you still got Jefferson. West is going to be uber competitive but I'll predict a second-place finish for them and a 13-5 record.
You might notice that this is 9 out of 10. The 10th in review I'm still undecided on but I figure at this point I'll do a prediction thread for the 2020 season. I was going to do a mock expansion draft for the Schooners but I don't think we're getting a team now lol. RIP
That concludes all the teams in the CFL for this segment of In-Review. I hope you all enjoyed this content and its given me something to look forward to when football ends.

Final Mock (With Trades)

Bengals - Joe Burrow QB LSU
You have seen every reason as to why he should go to Cincinnati. He’s an Ohio kid, the reigning Heisman winner, and the best QB in college football this past season. It would be hard to justify taking anyone else here. Burrow is a winner, a leader, and will be the future of wherever he lands. Once he got the chance to accumulated at LSU we saw what happened. Burrow should be the number one pick.
Redskins - Chase Young EDGE Ohio State
I have seen plenty of film on Young. The truth is, it is very hard to find a fault in the man’s game. He probably has the highest expectations heading into the draft. For these reasons, I do not see Washington passing on him. They have drafted 3 first round D-lineman in the last 3 years and do have a plentiful of other needs including a tackle to replace Trent Williams and a corner to replace Josh Norman. Trading down a few picks to let someone take Tua here would probably be smart, but I believe they love Young too much.
Lions - Derrick Brown DT Auburn
This could be a trade down spot for Detroit but it seems in the recent days that QB’s may not go as high as originally thought. The Falcons may try to jump all the way up here for Simmons, but I am not sure they have the capital. The Lions have been linked a lot to Brown and reportedly fell in love with him over the recent weeks. After the atrocious defensive effort last season and letting Snacks Harrison go, and Brown will be a huge upgrade for the Lions.
Giants - Jedrick Wills OT Alabama
Another potential trade down spot. I think the Giants best bet is Isaiah Simmons, but reports in the recent weeks suggest they will go offensive line. Gettleman said he needs to invest in protecting his franchise QB and opening up space for the face of the team in Saquon Barkley. Wills comes from Alabama, where HC Joe Judge coached for many years. The connection is there and Wills is the most pro ready tackle in the draft to most.
Dolphins - Tua Tagovailoa QB Alabama
Such an unpredictable pick here with so many conflicting reports, I am going with my gut. Adam Schefter reported the Dolphins were not as ‘all in on Tua’ as many thought, but I believe that is because they wanted Burrow who it doesn’t seem like they will be able to get. Maybe they trade up for an offensive lineman, or take one at five. I think they need to go with the player many thought was the best player in the draft up until his injury. Giving him a season’s rest should ensure his body is ready to go for a new and improved Miami team in 2021.
Chargers - Isaiah Simmons LB Clemson
The Chargers do need a QB, but not desperately. I believe they can play it smart here and wait to grab Herbert in the later half of the first round. Remember, Aaron Rodgers fell because no teams needed a QB, and who else really does after LA? Simmons can make their defense a top 5 one in the league, and the speed Simmons provides can help keep up with the speedy players in the AFC west.
Panthers - Jeff Okudah CB Ohio State
Okudah falls right into the lap of the Panthers at 7. They haven’t had a lock down CB since Josh Norman and Okudah is someone that can provide that stability. He is rated as the best CB in the draft and can help a rebuilding Panthers defense.
Falcons - C.J. Henderson CB Florida (Trade with Arizona)
Rumors have been swirling about the Falcons trading up, and I believe this the highest they can get considering where they sit at 16. Henderson is rated by some as a better corner than Okudah, and they need help after letting Trufant go to the Lions.
Jaguars - Tristan Wirfs OT Iowa
The Jaguars have a lot of holes. They let all of their stars go via trades and now building from the ground up. If I had to make a prediction, they could be picking in the top 5 next season. With that being said, going BPA here makes a lot of sense. Their offensive line has a lot of question marks on the edges, and Wirfs is a very versatile and strong player who can step in at guard or tackle and make a difference.
Broncos - Ceedee Lamb WrR Oklahoma (Trade with Cleveland)
There have been plenty of rumors about the Broncos trading up, either for tackle or WR. In my opinion, trading up in front of NYJ and LVR means they want to grade the WR they want, and that is Lamb. Adding a weapon like CeeDee can bring this offense into one of the best young offenses in 2020.
Jets - Andrew Thomas OT Georgia
The Jets would be thrilled if Thomas fell to them. Originally rated as the best OT, he can step in and make an immediate impact. If he doesn’t fall to them, I could see a trade down. I don’t think Douglas uses his first pick as a GM on a luxury pick like WR. Playing it safe with an OT makes more sense here.
Raiders - Henry Ruggs III WR Alabama
The Raiders have always been infatuated with speed. Ruggs brings that to table in his 4.27 40 time. The Raiders need help at WR where they were hurting big time last season after letting Antonio Brown go. Ruggs has a chance to make a big impact in Las Vegas.
Buccaneers - Mekhi Becton OT Louisville (Trade with San Francisco)
The Bucs trade up one spot to ensure they get their guy. Becton rose up draft boards after his combine performance and his combination of rare size and speed. Some scouts are skeptical of his abilities but his ceiling is the highest of all tackles on the board.
49ers - Jerry Jeudy WR Alabama (Trade with Tampa Bay)
The 49ers look like geniuses after a receiver many considered the best in the draft falls in their lap at 14. A report of knee issues that made have been made to get him to slide is why he falls this far to me, and will be a huge upgrade for Jimmy G’s receiving corp.
Browns - Josh Jones OT Houston (Trade with Denver)
After trading down with Denver, Cleveland gets a proven lineman in Josh Jones who had a great senior bowl. He posted the highest one on one win rate of any lineman. He also earned the highest PFF grade of any draft eligible tackle during the regular season in 2019. This is a great pick for Cleveland.
Cardinals - Javon Kinlaw DT South Carolina (Trade with Atlanta)
If this scenario plays out, it could be the biggest steal of the night. The Cardinals trade down and get a player who many believe is a top ten talent. His combination of size and lower body strength makes him a potential menace in the middle of trenches. Him and Derrick Brown are about the same size, but Kinlaw’s leg’s are much bigger so if you saw him from the waist up you would think he was a linebacker.
Cowboys - A.J. Terrell CB Clemson
Terrell has been in Dallas’ eyes for weeks now according to reports. The secondary must be addressed early by Dallas in the draft, and Terrell makes sense for them here. If not, I could see them going with McKinney from Alabama.
Dolphins - Xavier Mckinney S Alabama
Defensive minded head coach Brian Flores would love an Alabama safety to replace his former Alabama safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick. They do that with the exact pick they acquired for him. Their secondary needs a lot of help, but with the signing of Byron Jones and picking Mckinney, they can rebound in 2020.
Raiders - Kristian Fulton CB LSU
The Raiders need a lot of help in the secondary. They had one of the worst sets of corners in the league in 2019. Fulton can ‘exceed in a lot of different schemes’ and was the number one corner against ‘accurate passes according to PFF, receiving a 74.5 rating. In comparison, none of the corners I have selected above him were in the top 5. With the level of passes being a lot more accurate in the NFL compared to college, I like the sound of that ranking a lot. He also has the highest career grade of any the high rated corners at 91.9 in coverage.
Jaguars - Patrick Queen LB LSU
Queen is seen as the second best LB in the draft by many. The Jags need a lot of help and could go corner or trade this pick, but judging off BPA Queen could be the choice here. He is quick and makes plays. He is the pro-typical linebacker of todays age.
Eagles - Justin Jefferson WR LSU
Jefferson performed astoundedly when it mattered the most, posting 30 catches for 448 and 5 touchdowns in the final three games of his career. He is one of the most underrated prospects in the country and can be the WR 1 in Philly for years to come. They need a lot of help at WR and may trade up, but if not Jefferson should be their guy.
Chargers - Justin Herbert QB Oregon (Trade with Minnesota)
The Chargers trade up and get in front of NE to grab the guy they knew would be there later in the draft. Herbert has some work to do, but he has the intangibles of a franchise QB. Letting him sit under Taylor for a year to learn what it takes to be the guy can help him greatly in the long run. His screen percentage in college scares many, but I believe he can have a successful career with the right franchise backing him.
Patriots - K’Lavon Chaisson EDGE LSU
The Pats would be ecstatic if he falls to them at 23. Seen as the second best edge rusher in the draft, the Pats would love to upgrade their defense that they will surely have to be riding in 2020 to go far. He is still raw, but showed flashes of greatness in 2019 after being injured all of 2018.
Saints - Kenneth Murray LB Oklahoma
Murray is a consensus 2 or 3 ranked linebacker in most prospect lists, and his production at Oklahoma shows he can be someone that can make an impact for New Orleans. Racking up over 100 tackles in 2019 and running a 4.5 40, Murray can stretch the field.
Vikings - Jeff Gladney CB TCU
Gladney was the best corner in the Big 12 this season, holding CeeDee Lamb to two catches in their matchup.Taking a shot on Gladney who was productive in all of his years at TCU including All-Big12 honors as both a junior and senior while breaking up 26 passes, grabbing 3 interceptions, and being credited with six tackles for loss, he could be an answer for the replacement of the CBs they let walk in free agency.
Dolphins - Ceaser Ruiz C Michigan
Rising up boards lately, Ruiz has been linked to Miami. Their Offensive line was very bad last season, and that was partly because they had no one to hand the ball off to. With that being said, they could address RB here, but Ruiz could end up being a great selection.
Seahawks - Yetur Gross-Matos EDGE Penn State
Seattle seems to be trying hard to address this need, signing Jadeveon Clowney (who we are not sure is staying long term) and drafting L.J. Collier in the first round last season. Even after these moves, only one team had fewer sacks than Seattle last season. A Ravens scout called him ‘an athletic marvel,’ standing at 6’5” 265 lbs and accumulating 9.5 sacks last season.
Ravens - DeAndre Swift RB Georgia
Ingram is aging. The Ravens will be one of the best rushing offenses for years to come and can solidify that with the pick of Swift here. He is explosive and was seeing time in a crowded backfield of Sony Michel and Nick Chubb two seasons ago, showing how good he has been for the Bulldogs.
Titans - Austin Jackson OT USC
After letting Jack Conklin walk in free agency, the Titans will need someone to protect their new franchise QB whom they signed to a 4 year deal. Jackson is by many experts evaluation the next best tackle on the board after Jones. He is raw, but his performance this past season earned him a potential first round grade.
Packers - Brandon Aiyuk WR Arizona State
Aiyuk has been flying up the boards lately. Green Bay has been making noise about trading up, so maybe they want a higher rated receiver. If they do not end up doing so, pairing Aiyuk with Adams can help to make the Packers have a stronger offense in 2020.
Colts - Jordan Love QB Utah State (Trade with San Francisco)
Referred to as ‘a poor man’s Mahomes’ by one NFL coach, Love has risen up draft boards due to his very high ceiling. I personally am not sold on him and see him sliding past this pick potentially. However, Rivers is on a one year deal and Brissett only has one more year as well. The best scenario is Love falling to Indy or them potentially trading for a guy like Josh Rosen to develop, because Rivers and Brissett are not the long term answer for a team with value young pieces.
Chiefs - A.J. Epenesa EDGE Iowa
If Epenesa falls this far, I do not see the Chiefs passing up on the opportunity to draft him. As their defensive line continues to improve, adding a player with the production caliber of Epenesa can help get the ball in Pat Mahomes hands that much quicker. Epenesa totaled 22 sacks in his final two seasons and while he isn’t the sexiest prospect (his combine performance has caused him to fall), if you watch his film at Iowa you will see him in the back field as a disruptor more often than not.

Welcome to /r/CFB! Here is your 2019 Rules Refresher & Information post!

THE SEASON IS UPON US. PRAISE PORTAL!

Are you new here?

We would like to welcome you to the greatest place on the internet, /CFB! We are a community of nearly 600,000 college football fan...atics from all over the globe who live and breathe college football. There is just something about college football that grabs you and makes you want to scream at a TV or a ref all day on Saturdays (or other days, if you've got some MACgic). We should warn you, however, that college football is not for the faint of heart.
There are countless CFB teams for you to root for - in the US and around the world. We guarantee you've got a college football team nearby. We do our best to cover them all.
Once you have found a team to support you should consider picking up a flair to show your fandom and pride. /CFB has over 2,300 unique flairs to choose from. /CFB currently has the ability for dual flairs. This allows you to show your fandom for two teams or your team and its conference, or even show your support for BelkBowl and wear a flair for your favorite bowl game!
Each Saturday there will be a number of Game Threads where discussion for each game goes on. For the Featured Games on the sidebar, CFB_Referee will post a Featured Game Thread an hour before kickoff. If you don't see a thread for the game you are watching, feel free to make one with our Game Thread Creator!
Here are some links you should visit...
We recommend you take a moment to read the rules and the post rules before posting so you don't violate one by accident. Look for threads already happening on a topic to add your take. Look for weekly threads (see below) to ask questions or share specific ideas. If you're not sure? Send us a modmail to ask!
Also of note, due to our use of CSS, we think /CFB is best viewed on Old Reddit. We're doing our best to get things fixed and updated to work with New Reddit, but it doesn't always work the way we want yet.

What happened during the offseason?

Rule Refresher

Here at /CFB we have some pretty simple rules - you can read all of them here. For a refresher, here is a TL;DR of some of the important ones to keep in mind.
No flair based downvoting.
The downvote button does not exist to put down teams you don't like, people you don't like, or opinions you don't like. Instead, use it to get rid of trolls or bad content. Downvoting just because of flair makes Coach Snyder sad. Don't make Coach Snyder sad.
No flamebait, personal attacks or harassment.
Have a good time on /CFB and be nice. No argument is worth getting into on the internet. We encourage strong debates and good discussion but if it ultimately comes down to "You are wrong, I am right" and name calling you will be banned. Examples, while not comprehensive, include instances like you calling someone an idiot, telling them you hope they die, claim all fans of X team are Y horrible thing... these are just a few examples of Rule 2 violations.
No racism, homophobia, sexism, or other bigotry.
Seriously. Discussing college football should never lead to this. Remember, this is a place to talk about football, that's it. One of the great things about /CFB is that it isn't the ESPN or AL.com comment sections - it's a welcoming place for fans of all teams, regardless of who you are. This also means no jokes about rape AND it means no using rape or rape scandals as flamebait.
Tweets must be made as self-posts.
To cut down on Tweet-spam, all direct Twitter links will be removed.
No word-for-word pasting of paywall content.
We can't allow users to repost content from paid sites. There is a reason the paywall exists and writers deserve the money. Feel free to quickly summarize an article, though, or include a very brief quote.
No stream links.
Reddit as a whole is cracking down on this. Do not link to illegal stream sites or to subreddits aggregating those links. Discussion about options like Hulu Live, You Tube TV, etc. are allowed, but keep in mind that quality master lists have been posted already and generic requests for cord cutter options may be removed.
No which team/fanbase is X threads.
Threads designed to put down other teams or fanbases will be removed. We want posts that encourage positive discussion and debate, not collective hate. We have had plenty of these threads in the past and there is no reason to have anymore. Example thread titles include "Which fanbase is most delusional?" and "Which team do you irrationally hate?"
Reporting
While this isn't a rule, it does help us make sure the rules get applied consistently. We can't be everywhere, so that means we need you to help out by reporting posts or comments that break the rules. You may have noticed the new options for reporting comments and submissions - hopefully this will make things easier! PLUS if you respond and break the rules yourself, you risk a ban. Just hit report and let us handle it.
Tweets
DON'T TWEET AT CROOTS. DON'T TWEET AT PORTAL SACRIFICES.
A few new things...
  • We're added a rule forbidding Buy/Sell/Trade Posts. We just have no way to verify that people posting these classifieds aredoing or will do what they claim, so we're going to be removing any such threads.
  • We're not going to allow tweets or direct information from family members as a source for recruiting news. We've had too many moments of parents or random relatives saying something the players then have to refute. In order for a source to be considered trustworthy, information must come from the recruit himself, a school official (such as a SID or coach), or a legitimate news source staking their journalistic reputation on that reporting.

With so many users, there are bound to be a few bad apples. Don't let them steer you away. Let's do our best to welcome new users and educate them on the sport we all know and love. Here is to more touchdowns, more fans, and another amazing season on /CFB.
