Arizona State Injury Report
Last updated: October 15, 2019
Player Position Status Type Notes
Brandon Ruiz PK Out Knee Ruiz suffered a knee injury, and there is no timetable for return.
Cade Cote OL Questionable Foot Cote has sat out the last two games with a foot injury, and it is unknown if he will play against Utah on Saturday.
Injury data lifted from: sports-reference.com
Keys to the game:
The overarching theme will be experience vs. youth. Utah has a deeply experienced offense and defense, while ASU's younger players have surprised many this year. With both teams currently at 5-1 this game will go a long way in determining the Pac 12 south champion.
The quarterback battle will be electric. Tyler Huntley has proven to be an efficient disseminator of the football, boasting the top QBR in the conference and is among the nation's most accurate QBs (though takes fewer attempts overall). Jayden Daniels is ASU's true freshman starter and is quite possibly the best true freshman QB this year, having confidence and football IQ far above the norm for his age.
Who do you think wins?
Utah is currently favored by 14 points, and will be possibly the most balanced team that ASU faces this year. The Utes maintain a near 50-50 ratio of run and pass, with Zack Moss being one of the best running backs nation-wide, and Huntley being one of the most accurate passers nationwide. While ASU's offensive line has done well this year, especially for starting 2 freshman, they will likely struggle against Utah's effective and deep defensive line.
Do you think the favorite will cover the spread?
The line started at ASU +12.5 and has since risen to 14. This seems too high for many. While the Utes have the capability to score that many, the question is "will they?" Additionally, the weather for Saturday evening looks poor, which may dampen the overall scoring. Be careful betting on this one, it has all the makings of the under and ASU covering the spread
Which player(s) are you most interested to watch?
Again, the QB battle will be fun to watch. Also, watch for Eno Benjamin and Zack Moss, as they are the conference's two top running backs. Also watch for ASU's Brandon Aiyuk against Utah CB Jaylon Johnson.
Let's talk football!
To vote in the matchup "who will win poll" simply include the name of the team you think will win enclosed by {} as part of your TOP LEVEL comment discussing the matchup. Welcome to /r/CFB! Here is your 2019 Rules Refresher & Information post!

THE SEASON IS UPON US. PRAISE PORTAL!

Are you new here?

We would like to welcome you to the greatest place on the internet, /CFB! We are a community of nearly 600,000 college football fan...atics from all over the globe who live and breathe college football. There is just something about college football that grabs you and makes you want to scream at a TV or a ref all day on Saturdays (or other days, if you've got some MACgic). We should warn you, however, that college football is not for the faint of heart.
There are countless CFB teams for you to root for - in the US and around the world. We guarantee you've got a college football team nearby. We do our best to cover them all.
Once you have found a team to support you should consider picking up a flair to show your fandom and pride. /CFB has over 2,300 unique flairs to choose from. /CFB currently has the ability for dual flairs. This allows you to show your fandom for two teams or your team and its conference, or even show your support for BelkBowl and wear a flair for your favorite bowl game!
Each Saturday there will be a number of Game Threads where discussion for each game goes on. For the Featured Games on the sidebar, CFB_Referee will post a Featured Game Thread an hour before kickoff. If you don't see a thread for the game you are watching, feel free to make one with our Game Thread Creator!
Here are some links you should visit...
We recommend you take a moment to read the rules and the post rules before posting so you don't violate one by accident. Look for threads already happening on a topic to add your take. Look for weekly threads (see below) to ask questions or share specific ideas. If you're not sure? Send us a modmail to ask!
Also of note, due to our use of CSS, we think /CFB is best viewed on Old Reddit. We're doing our best to get things fixed and updated to work with New Reddit, but it doesn't always work the way we want yet.

What happened during the offseason?

Rule Refresher

Here at /CFB we have some pretty simple rules - you can read all of them here. For a refresher, here is a TL;DR of some of the important ones to keep in mind.
No flair based downvoting.
The downvote button does not exist to put down teams you don't like, people you don't like, or opinions you don't like. Instead, use it to get rid of trolls or bad content. Downvoting just because of flair makes Coach Snyder sad. Don't make Coach Snyder sad.
No flamebait, personal attacks or harassment.
Have a good time on /CFB and be nice. No argument is worth getting into on the internet. We encourage strong debates and good discussion but if it ultimately comes down to "You are wrong, I am right" and name calling you will be banned. Examples, while not comprehensive, include instances like you calling someone an idiot, telling them you hope they die, claim all fans of X team are Y horrible thing... these are just a few examples of Rule 2 violations.
No racism, homophobia, sexism, or other bigotry.
Seriously. Discussing college football should never lead to this. Remember, this is a place to talk about football, that's it. One of the great things about /CFB is that it isn't the ESPN or AL.com comment sections - it's a welcoming place for fans of all teams, regardless of who you are. This also means no jokes about rape AND it means no using rape or rape scandals as flamebait.
Tweets must be made as self-posts.
To cut down on Tweet-spam, all direct Twitter links will be removed.
No word-for-word pasting of paywall content.
We can't allow users to repost content from paid sites. There is a reason the paywall exists and writers deserve the money. Feel free to quickly summarize an article, though, or include a very brief quote.
No stream links.
Reddit as a whole is cracking down on this. Do not link to illegal stream sites or to subreddits aggregating those links. Discussion about options like Hulu Live, You Tube TV, etc. are allowed, but keep in mind that quality master lists have been posted already and generic requests for cord cutter options may be removed.
No which team/fanbase is X threads.
Threads designed to put down other teams or fanbases will be removed. We want posts that encourage positive discussion and debate, not collective hate. We have had plenty of these threads in the past and there is no reason to have anymore. Example thread titles include "Which fanbase is most delusional?" and "Which team do you irrationally hate?"
Reporting
While this isn't a rule, it does help us make sure the rules get applied consistently. We can't be everywhere, so that means we need you to help out by reporting posts or comments that break the rules. You may have noticed the new options for reporting comments and submissions - hopefully this will make things easier! PLUS if you respond and break the rules yourself, you risk a ban. Just hit report and let us handle it.
Tweets
DON'T TWEET AT CROOTS. DON'T TWEET AT PORTAL SACRIFICES.
A few new things...
  • We're added a rule forbidding Buy/Sell/Trade Posts. We just have no way to verify that people posting these classifieds aredoing or will do what they claim, so we're going to be removing any such threads.
  • We're not going to allow tweets or direct information from family members as a source for recruiting news. We've had too many moments of parents or random relatives saying something the players then have to refute. In order for a source to be considered trustworthy, information must come from the recruit himself, a school official (such as a SID or coach), or a legitimate news source staking their journalistic reputation on that reporting.

Final Thoughts

This season will be the biggest and busiest season in /CFB's history. We've jumped to nearly 600,000 football fans with more joining every day. We continue to grow and push our outreach even farther, adding more CFB media coverage and outreach, new AMAs, and new options for our users. But remember, /CFB is built by you, the user. Without the daily content and thousands of comments, /CFB would be a barren place. We pride ourselves on being the best subreddit on reddit and we are doing our best to keep it that way. With so many users, there are bound to be a few bad apples. Don't let them steer you away. Let's do our best to welcome new users and educate them on the sport we all know and love. Here is to more touchdowns, more fans, and another amazing season on /CFB.

Kliff Kingsbury Dudes and dudettes, welcome back to college football!
We are now less than two weeks away from the first FBS games of the 2018-2019 college football season. LET'S DO THIS!

Tigger Are you new here?

We would like to welcome you to the greatest place on the internet, /CFB! We are a community of over 450,000 college football fanatics from all over the globe who live and breathe college football and are some of the most passionate fans you’ll ever find. We love arguing about BBQ, beer, and fall weddings #stopfallweddings.
There is just something about college football that grabs you and makes you want to scream at a TV for 12 straight hours on Saturdays. We should warn you, however, that college football is not for the faint of heart. There will be rage, laughter, sorrow, celebration, and shock.
There are countless CFB teams for you to root for - wherever you are in the USA (or even some parts of the world), you've got a college football team nearby. We do our best to cover them all.
Once you have found a team to support you should consider picking up a flair to show your fandom and pride. /CFB has over 2,300 unique flairs to choose from. /CFB currently has the ability for dual flairs. Touchdown Rule Refresher

Here at /CFB we have some pretty simple rules but here are some of the important ones to keep in mind.
No flair based downvoting
While there is no way for us to check this, we would still like to bring it to attention. The downvote button does not exist to put down teams you don't like, people you don't like, or opinions you don't like. Instead, use it to get rid of trolls or bad content. Downvoting just because of flair makes Coach Snyder sad. Don't make Coach Snyder sad.
No flamebait, personal attacks or harassment
Does this really need to be explained? Don't be a troll. Have a good time on /CFB and be nice. No argument is worth getting into on the internet. We encourage strong debates and good discussion but if it ultimately comes down to "You are wrong, I am right" and name calling you will be banned.
No racism, homophobia, sexism, or other bigotry
Seriously. Discussing college football should never lead to this. Remember, this is a place to talk about football, that's it. One of the great things about /CFB is that it isn't the ESPN or AL.com comment sections - it's a welcoming place for fans of all teams, regardless of who you are.
Tweets must be made as self-posts
To cut down on Tweet-spam, all direct Twitter links will be removed.
Use the weekly threads
Like last season we have a weekly thread on every day of the week. These threads cover everything from predictions to highlights. If you post a link that belongs in one of these threads it will be removed without warning.
Word-for-word pasting of paywall content
We can't allow users to repost content from paid sites. There is a reason the paywall exists and writers deserve the money. Feel free to quickly summarize an article, though.
Which team/fanbase is X threads
Threads designed to put down other teams or fanbases will be removed. We want posts that encourage positive discussion and debate, not collective hate. We have had plenty of these threads in the past and there is no reason to have anymore. Example thread titles include "Which fanbase is most delusional?" and "Which team do you irrationally hate?"
Reporting
While this isn't a rule, it does help us make sure the rules get applied consistently. We can't be everywhere, so that means we need you to help out by reporting posts that break the rules. You may have noticed the new options for reporting comments and submissions - hopefully this will make things easier!
NEW
We now have a separate site with our full list of rules and guidelines! PLEASE READ THE FULL LIST OF RULES HERE! This includes information about our ban policy, our post rules, and our rules for posting about recruits and transfers.

/CFB Ball Preseason Schedule

New this year, we're modifying how we're handling our regular Weekly Threads in the lead up to the season. The big difference here will be that we're splitting up the Prediction Thread into 8 different threads. There will be 1 thread for each P5 conference, 1 for the G5, a "BOLD" prediction thread, and finally 1 for overall season predictions like who will make the playoffs or win the Heisman. We are also going to limit the number of Depth Chart posts to a single thread where you can post and discuss them all to your heart's content. Additionally, the other Weekly Threads will have their own pre-season counterparts posted on their typical days. Here's what the Pre-Season Schedule will look like:

Lee Corso Final Thoughts

This season will be the biggest and busiest season in /CFB's history. We've nearly doubled in size since our welcome post last year. Seriously - we had just passed 250,000 subscribers this time last year and now we're staring down half a million. We continue to grow and push our outreach even farther, adding more CFB media coverage and outreach, new AMAs, and new options for our users. But remember, /CFB is built by you, the user. Without the daily content submitted or the thousands of comments, /CFB would be a barren place. We hail ourselves as being the best subreddit on reddit and we are doing our best to keep it that way. With so many users, there are bound to be a few bad apples. Don't let them steer you away. Let's do our best to welcome new users and educate them on the sport we all know and love. Keys to the Game
Despite being on a 12 year winning streak, their longest of the storied 120+ year rivalry, this game typically yields, interesting and competitive games. The schools, 45 minutes apart, come into the game with very different mindsets.
Miami, fresh off a 7 point defeat at the hands of Marshal, is going to sling it behind the arm of multi-year standout Gus Ragland. Ragland has shown signs of stardom in the past but has allowed inconsistency to spur uncertainty in the eyes of the RedHawk fandom. If Ragland can avoid turning the ball over and throw with accuracy to his strong receiving corps (Sorenson, Gardner, and Young), the Bearcats are in for a grueling grind of a game. Don't expect much to come on the ground for the Redhawks or for Miami's defense to stifle the strong, athletic Bearcat offense.
Cincinnati, conversely, used 9 4th quarter points to take down the UCLA Bruins in week 1. Contrary to the Redhawks' offensive approach, expect Cincy to focus on a ground attack on offense. While Miami saw 37% of its plays come on the ground resulting in 19% of its yardage, the Bearcats saw 66% of its offense come on the ground resulting in 64% of its yardage. Behind quaterback Desmond Ridder and banged up running back Michael Warren II, expect the Bearcats to ground and pound their way downfield.
Who Wins?
If the Cincinnati Bearcat running back, Micahel Warren II, is slowed due to injury or plays a greatly reduced role due to injury, I expect a close game with Miami (OH) eeking out the victory. Miami may also find themselves victorious behind the strong arm of their budding quaterback, Gus Ragland. If he can limit turnovers, he can keep the Redhawks in contention for any game with his strong receivers. However, if the Bearcats are healthy and active, their talent, athleticism, and strength will likely prove too much for the Redhawks and extend their streak to 13 straight victories.
Who to bet on?
Again, this comes down to the health of the Bearcats. That being said, I wouldn't advise betting on this game ever. Despite the 12 game streak the Bearcats are on, even in win-less seasons or 1-win seasons, this game is always close. This is a 123 year old rivalry between schools 45 minutes apart and alumni who (mixed with Xavier) make up a large portion of the Cincinnati workforce.
People to Watch
  • Gus Ragland: This man has a ton of potential and has shown flashes of this potential in the past few years. However, he has also shown some very bad streaks in the past. A strong performance against Marshal almost helped Miami come out victorious in Week 1. In order to go to a bowl game again (this is the team that started the year 0-6 and finished the year 6-0 to gain bowl eligibility), they are going to need a solid year from Ragland.
  • Michael Warren II: Cincinnati is a borderline top 25 team with this kid healthy. They are going to be a team that no one wants to play due to the rushing attack of both Warren and the quaterback. If this rushing attack can open up some lanes in the passing game, Cincinnati is going to be a tough, tough team to beat. Look for Warren to surpass 150 yards against the Redhawks this week.
  • The Miami Receiving Corps: James Gardner is a multi-year standout. Kenny Young has the makings of a brilliant multi-faceted offensive player. Jack Sorenson hopes to bolt past defenders for another 50+ yard TD reception. Luke Mayock is looking for a strong game to enjoy his time in the spotlight since apparently 4 catches for 43 yards isn't enough to be in the spotlight.
  • Cortez Broughton: 3.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks against UCLA in week 1 for the Bearcats. Now, he faces a weaker offensive line and a teak that dropped back to pass 46 times in the first week and will likely do so 50+ times in the second week. Broughton will have plenty of opportunities to rack up some more sacks and start his season off on a very, very high note.
  • Joe Schmoe went to UC, his brother went to Miami, and their cousin went to Xavier. They then came back to Cincy and got jobs with P&G, Kroger, Duke, etc. This is how Cincinnati feels. It will be really interesting to see how much tailgating/partying happens before the game, how much drinking occurs after the game, and what the bars are like in The Banks after the game. Keep your eyes peeled for drunk college kids and other adults doing stupid stuff everytime the camera pans to the crowd.

What are your "Keys to the Game"?
  • Defense. This game is pegged to be a sloppy shootout, and Western Illinois has the home field advantage. The Griz defense has some fantastic play in the secondary, led by back-to-back Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week LB Dante Olson, who has racked up sacks and tackles for loss the first two games of the season. Even though Olson is getting the attention on the defense, No. 37 Jesse Sims has been making noise and a key to Olson's success. However, DT Khalen Saunders was a preseason All-American after last season's solid campaign. Saunders will be causing issues for Montana's offense right up the gut.
  • Running the Ball. While this game has a high oveunder and the bookies believe this might be a game with some big numbers, the keys to victory are going to be who can execute the fundamentals of old-school football better. The Leathernecks' senior RB Steve McShane will likely be the biggest threat against an inexperienced Montana defensive front. On the flip side, the Griz have broken out the Run-Pass-Option and WR Jerry Louie-McGee is an electric ball carrier, particularly in open space.
  • From a narrative perspective, Western Illinois has gone through an absurdly tough schedule the last three weeks. They opened against Montana State in Bozeman, went up to Urbana-Champaign to play a struggling, but still P5 Illinois, and now they finally return home to play a Top 15 Griz squad. In those three games, Illinois might have been the easiest for the Leathernecks. The Leathernecks' 0-2 start is not indicative of their talent, but rather their tough schedule. While they might be at home and favored, such a brutal OOC and two road trips might have them gassed for this game.
Who do you think wins?
  • I am of course going to pick the Griz, but betting lines like Western Illinois.
Do you think the favorite will cover the spread?
  • Hell no
Which player(s) are you most interested to watch?
Montana
  • QB Dalton Sneed
  • WR Jerry Louie-McGee
  • LB Dante Olson
Western Illinois
  • RB Steve McShane
  • DT Khalen Suanders

2. Before the season, a lot of Buckeye fans circled the Nebraska game as the first real test of the B1G schedule and, sorry Husker bros, it absolutely wasn't. The Buckeyes dominated this game from the start and JT Barrett had quite possibly the best game of his career. Ryan Day deserves a humongous bonus in the off-season for the work he's done with JT this year. Now the Buckeyes get a week off to prepare for a date in The Shoe with Penn State that quite possibly determine the B1G East champion. topher3003
3. I first want to say that Purdue put up a hell of a fight. They were in the game until the end and they deserved to be. When you look at the stats though (or just watch the game) it's clear that Wisconsin wasn't just fighting Purdue, they were fighting themselves. The Badgers dominated every statistic, including turnovers and penalties committed. This is a team that has all the tools it needs for a special season, but they need to take care of the little things. Hornibrook is a talented passer. He completes two out of three passes and averages nearly ten yards per attempt. He gets the job done when we need him to on 3rd down. He made a great pass on Saturday while being tackled to the ground. But he doesn't always make the right decision. Hornibrook is far from the only Badger in this position. A lot of little mental mistakes lie between UW and their potential. Can't forget to acknowledge Jonathan Taylor whose valiant attempt at becoming the first true freshman to reach 1000 yards in six games (despite not even starting week 1) was a constant source of excitement throughout the game, and also Leon Jacobs whose red zone interception kept Purdue out of the end zone and allowed us to run out the rest of the clock on offense. pianobadger
4. That was about as typical of a Spartan's game as you can get. We ran the ball effectively, hit the right amount of passes in some key moments, built up a good lead, squandered that lead by playing prevent defense (sometimes it is prevent offense), and squeak out what should have been a dominating win. There are still too many mistakes: lots of fumbles, Lewerke threw a few bad balls for interceptions, and that late holding call again prevented what could have been the game sealing play. Overall, they showed they could respond after a big game and win on the road, which is never guaranteed. This team is looking more like an 8+ win team than a team fighting for bowl eligibility at this point. Hopefully that plays out and 2016 will fade away as another fluke year like 2012. FoxMcbowser42

7. Wisconsin put Purdue into a 14-0 hole early, thanks to some big runs by Jonathan Taylor, but the Boilermaker defense tightened up after that, only allowing a single field goal the rest of the way. The key to this was that a defense which hasn't had a ton of takeaways this year was able to grab three. Unfortunately, the Wisconsin defense played incredibly well, as well. Purdue was only able to manage three field goals, and a late drive that had the potential to tie the game ended abruptly when Elijah Sindelar threw an ill-advised pass on a broken play that was intercepted. Nonetheless, Wisconsin was favored by 17, and Purdue had a chance to tie it late, so it's another game where the new look Boilermakers held their own much better than last year. Next week, Purdue looks to notch a second Big Ten win for the first time in 5 years and close to within 2 games of a bowl bid at Rutgers. dgahimer
8. Indiana's frustrating status of perpetual almost-#chaosteam continued this weekend against a Michigan squad still fumbling blindly for an offensive identity. On offense, the Hoosiers struggled mightily against what may well be the best defense in the country. Peyton Ramsey hit just under 50% of his 40 (!!) passes, two of which went to the guys in the wrong jerseys. One of those INTs went on a fairly well-thrown ball that was covered very well by Lavert Hill, doing his best Jourdan Lewis impression. Although a 60+ yarder to Simmie Cobbs was called back on a questionable flag for ineligible reciever. Regardless, Ramsey is a clear upgrade over Lagow and should continue to start and improve as he gets reps. The O-Line was a turnstyle against Michigan's formidable D-Line. Ellison ran the ball well against a stout Michigan defense, picking up 4.8 YPC on 14 touches, which looks a heck of a lot less impressive if you take out a 31 yard burst. Without a plausible rushing attack, Indiana was forced into Ramsey's 40 attempts. The Hoosier defense played great, outside of holding back Karan Higdon. Higdon broke out for 200 yards across 25 carries, including a 60-yard burst on a never before seen counter play and a bouncing effort that crushed Indiana's chances in OT. The passing offense was much better, but John O'Korn doesn't exactly make it hard for a passing defense to look great. On that note, a big time INT was overturned on a fairly ticky-tack PI call, one that even MgoBlog found to be favoring the Wolverines. On special teams, Oakes hit a pair of field goals, including one as time expired to send the game into overtime. A key punt return also helped get the Hoosiers into good field position with less than 5 minutes remaining. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the onside kick ([he was in - https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumboftVChwvnuzBBv_l0wpxIlNlifWw=/600x0/filters:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/9461093/Screen_Shot_2017_10_14_at_3.36.19_PM.png). As Coach Allen said in the postgame presser, you've got to earn your luck and his squad hasn't yet. Still, in a game this close, it's hard to put aside that voice deep in your subconscious saying that would've been the deciding factor. Going forward, IU travels to East Lansing, taking on number 18 Michigan State. Indiana matches up fairly well with Michigan State and Tom Allen's still in search of a signature win. Indiana ranks 40th in S&P+ (22nd def / 90th off / 10 ST), while Michigan State clocks in at 20th overall (9 / 78 / 59). An upset can't be counted out, especially if Indiana can get some turnover luck and can take advantage of their special teams edge. Look out, Spartans. Looking back, IU has faced 3 teams in the top 15 in S&P+ (measured at the time of kickoff) and 1 in the bottom 15, a FCS team and a Virginia squad that's ranked in the top 40 currently. This Saturday should really help to shed some light on just how good this Indiana team is. OMGitzSARS
9. Northwestern bounced back with a win over Maryland, with a strong turnout from DC area Northwestern alumni excited to have their team out in their area for the first time in history. RB Justin Jackson had 171 yards and has now obtained the all time Northwestern rushing record, passing Damien Anderson during the first half. The defense generally held up well, with the exception of a few big plays, which has been the norm lately. The O-Line looked much better than it did the last two weeks against PSU and Wisconsin, and Northwestern's receivers played well. It likely would have been a large margin if not for two bad picks by QB Thorson who was not in his best form with regards to decision making. Next up is Iowa, an important game if Northwestern wants to have a respectable finish to the season. LeinadSpoon
10. I guess it's better to almost come back than it is to lose the game in the last few minutes? Through the first 3 quarters of play the Gophers managed just 6 points and 124 yards of offense. Once again not capitalizing on turnovers and turning them to touchdowns. The second half saw a quarterback change, with the previously suspended RS Sophmore Demry Croft taking over for RS Senior Conor Rhoda. In the 4th the Gophers found life putting up 21 points on 3 touchdown passes. But it wasn't enough, two failed onsides and MSU wins 30-27. The defense was soft again, most of the original secondary is our with injuries. MSU exploited it beautifully by running 15+ (probably) toss plays, that effectively took the DL out of the play, pulling guards took care of LBs and the weight on the secondary to make these plays was too much to handle. The coaching staff will have to figure out how to handle these plays because you can bet it will be exploited in the future. No official word yet on if Croft will continue to start as QB1, however, Rhoda's inability to be a threat in the read option is stiffling to our offense and it should be Croft's turn now. Illinois this week is a must win if the Gopher's want to claw their way to bowl eligibility. kShnarsty
11. The Northwestern game was one of the most frustrating games I’ve ever watched as a fan. Normally I’m prepared to be curb stomped but in this one I expected us to be competitive. Unfortunately our defense was straight garbage and the offense just lit the match in this dumpster fire of a performance. Despite Clayton Thorson’s two free interceptions, the defense allowed 11 3rd down conversions in the first half alone. The offense meanwhile didn’t sustain a drive of more than 6 plays until late in the 3rd. Despite how awful we played, it was a one score game as the 4th quarter approached. Instead of putting it together, Maryland’s day ended with a -4 yard drive followed by three failed 4th down conversions in a row. Some of the blame falls on the [3rd string] quarterback and skill position players for failing to make plays (sans DJ Moore who accounted for 210 of Maryland’s 340 total yards), but the defense (also down its two best players) failed miserably to stop the run, generate a pass rush, or make stops in critical situations. 12. It's not Bob Diaco's 3-4 defense without a 3-4 record! The Buckeyes pounded us in a much more depressing fashion than Wisconsin could even dream of. Everyone keeps saying that fans were walking out at half time. Take it from this first-hand account that they were leaving much sooner. It was the 8:20 mark of the 2nd quarter that people began filing out. That's 21 minutes and 40 seconds of football before fans truly gave up, but in their defense, Mike Riley gave up years ago. Nebraska_Actually
13. Well folks, looks like Chris Ash bounced back after an embarrassing 1-4 start to the season by putting up a dominant performance against Illinois. With that said, this was a sloppy game by the Scarlet Knights, but a sloppy game that was physical and hard fought. Gio Rescigno took the reigns at starting QB and acted as an experienced game manager and (surprisingly) a tough physical runner (he was hurt with a knee injury and is day-to-day for Purdue). Rutgers offensive gameplan against Lovie Smith's Illini was to keep running the ball until it stopped working -- 5 TD's on the ground later Rutgers walked out of Champaign with a W. On the other side of the ball the defense looked solid despite a depleted secondary due to injuries. 2-sport athlete (Football/Baseball) WS Juwan Harris made his debut on defense with an interception, forced fumble, and a bunch of tackles. Special teams were effective despite a few big kickoff returns - the youth of the Rutgers team still shows on kickoffs and punts. Rutgers goes onto play Purdue next for homecoming.. bring your Taylor Ham brand pork roll to the game, 'cause it's a noon kickoff. This week's highlight - Raheem Blackshear's TD run which ignited the Rutgers offense: https://twitter.com/BigTenNetwork/status/919238833073541120 crustang
14. I think I’m happy that even though Rutgers won, they lost the most. 1. They lost last place. Like how do you do that? 2. They didn’t gain any counties in the /CFB imperialism map. In all fairness that was a tough game to watch. Our O-line stinks. Our run defense stinks. Our red-zone offense stinks. Our QBs have 4 TDs and 11 interceptions on the year. Chayse Crouch is officially listed as a Tight End. Mikey Dudek is nursing a knee injury. Mike Epstein (our only star) is likely done for the season with a foot injury. The only think keeping me sane is that a bunch of true freshman are getting reps on our O-line and defense. I’m not gonna pack it in. I am way to optimistic and think we still beat Minnesota, Purdue, NW and Indiana and make a bowl game somehow. But we all know Illinois won’t, and I just need something to blame for my rampant seasonal alcoholism. the_reddit_intern
Points are the summation of every voter's ranking for that team, therefore lower scores are better. This works because unlike the AP, Coaches, or /cfb polls, every team is ranked in every vote. If x votes were counted, the best possible score is x and the worst possible score is 14x. #1 votes are in parentheses.
Average Rank is the points divided by the number of votes. This will allow for comparison from one week to the next.
Prev. is the Rank from the previous week.
Change is the change in average rank from the previous week.
Variance is a measure of how much agreement there was between voters. A zero means all voters ranked a team the same, and a higher number means a team's ranking was more controversial.
I will always remove obvious spam votes from the poll. I also remove votes that were obviously unfair to one or more teams in a negative way. I chose to leave homer votes that were otherwise fair alone. The "Pretty Graphs" include the votes that were excluded from the poll. Voters may have ties in their rankings.

Mod Announcements: *Fundraisng Contest for Alternate Flair*, Two Amazing AMAs, /r/CFB Poll Voters Selected, Flair Awards, New Flair, 132 Team Posts, Many Thanks to ToasterCookie

This is gonna be a long one so buckle in. To start, ToasterCookie has stepped down as a mod after being here for three years. He will be missed!

ALS FundraiseFlair Contest

Many, many people have asked about getting alternate flair for their team. 11 Teams won alternate flair in the contest at the end of last offseason, and now that we've redone the flair, there is room for more. We will not be giving out alternate flair to just anyone, and any future alternate flair has to be earned. This is the first such opportunity.
After the /CFB mods were challenged by /hockey, Honestly_ has set up a campaign that has already blown through our goal of $500, that will see him dunked in freezing cold water.
Edit: The entirety of this fundraiser will go towards the ALS Association. Our Rose Bowl Brick Fund supported the Kidz1stFund, and we plan another organized fundraiser for them in the future.
Whichever school donates the highest monetary amount to this fundraiser will be awarded an alternate flair. Future flair contests may be along similar lines. Note that no school will be given a second alternate flair, and so the prize will go to the top team without an alternate flair. We may think of some way to reward a team that already has an alternate flair if they should win.
Additionally, anyone who donates to this contest can win a brand new /CFB Donor award flair, which looks like a nice brick to go next to your name.

AMAs

We were blessed with two incredible AMAs this week. Bobby Bowden gave an amazing and candid AMA, partly to draw awareness to the Kidz1stFund, which was featured on USA Today, The Orlando Sentinel, Fox Sports, and Sports Illustrated among others. If you missed it, it was a rage.
Adam Amin of ESPN gave an incredible 7 hour AMA today. Very much worth the read.

Awards

We also are now offering six awards for select users. View a complete list, which should serve as a /CFB hall of fame for users at /cfb/wiki/awards. If you win an award you will be granted the capability to select it as a flair. If you would like to win an award right now, contribute to the ALS campaign above.
Edit: If you wrote a 35 Bowls in 17 Days post or a College Football Through the Years Post, you will get a contributor flair award as well, but it may take a little while.

Flair

There was much thanks and also uproar when we launched dual flair two days ago. Part of the issue was that a few hours after we launched dual flair, Reddit released a sitewide HTML update that essentially made the flair cover the upvote arrows. Based on user feedback we've repositioned the flair to be horizontally next to the username in a way that looks good. This is still a work in progress and we appreciate your feedback.
Note that you cannot have two flairs from the same team. This is both for stylistic reasons, and because it would impact flair counts.
Several new teams have been added to the Flair Selector, pulling the total north of 900 for the first time. most notably, we now offer all top tier BUCS and ONEFA teams, for our friends across the pond and south of the border.
To wrap up on flairs, we know that there are pros and cons to offering two flairs. We've tried to make it look clean and non-disruptive, and the benefits include:
We are the first sub to offer the capability of having two flairs for every flair in the flair sheet, and we're excited about this capability.

132 Teams Posts

Our last FBS 132 Teams Posts are finishing up this week starting with:
San Diego State will go tomorrow and Charlotte will wrap up on Friday. We are also seeking people to maintain the permanent posts in our team guide. Users who wrote the initial posts should be added as editors in the coming days, but some users are no longer active. In particular, there is no longer an active user who worked on either the Michigan State or Princeton Post. As always, we'd love to have people write posts for FCS and non-D1 schools that haven't been covered yet.

/CFB Poll Open

The /CFB Poll new voters have been announced. If you haven't applied yet or weren't selected you may be added midseason.

Edit: I can't spell Fundraising, but I'm going to pretend Fundrais'ng is a valid contraction.

Players to Watch

New in 2018! Automated "Who Will Win?" Polls!

To cast your vote simply include the name of the team you think will win enclosed by {} as part of your TOP LEVEL comment (i.e. a post reply as opposed to a reply to an existing comment). For example {Cincinnati}. You need not create a specific comment just to vote. Simply include your vote in line during your post discussing the match-up or include it at the end of your comment. If another poster manages to change your mind with their detailed points and emphatic discussion simply edit your original comment accordingly. You can change your vote as often as you like until the GAME THREAD is posted. Each user only get's a single vote per match-up, so if you make multiple {Vote} comments the system will record whichever it reads last; if you cast multiple {Votes} in the same comment the system will only consider the first {Vote}.
A full listing of accepted FBS team aliases can be found here.. For FCS teams you will need to use the full name as it appears in the post title.
Rivalrybot will be along shortly to make a comment with the results as well as update the results every couple of minutes and will comment in the eventual game thread with the final results.

Rivalries

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Final
Augsburg Augsburg Auggies 6 0 0 8 14
Hamline Hamline Pipers 0 21 14 0 35
  • The Hammer The Hammer The Hammer
  • As the newest booster of Hamline athletics (see #8) I am pleased to report the Pipers didn't fail in their conquest for The Hammer, trailing for about 15 minutes in the first half before a series of rapid scores pushed them over the Auggies. In wet conditions outside Minneapolis (or inside St. Paul, if you prefer), Augsburg couldn't get their offense started after their second drive, ending with -11 yards on the ground and just 230 yards total to HU's 400-yard output.
  • Augsburg's forgettable season is near its conclusion as they've secured their worst record in a decade. Despite their early lead, the Auggies punted five times to end the half, managing just five positive yardage drives in the 1st half; the second half saw more of the same, but as desperation set in Augsburg started to make worse mistakes, ultimately ending with three 2nd-half TOs.
  • The 20th try is evidently the charm as the Pipers have secured their first non-losing season since 1997, in no small part due to QB Justice Spriggs whose five TDs comprised the entirety of HU's scoring in the rivalry matchup. Spriggs now owns the Pipers' record for season passing yardage with 2261 and is nearing the season completion record, currently just seven behind. Unfortunately for Hamline, they play at St. John's next week, but that game will only darken a small part of their great season.
  • Player of the Game: HU QB Justice Spriggs, 24/30, 317 yds, 5 TD, 1 INT

East Texas Baptist (21/18) East Texas Baptist Tigers 16 22 14 12 64
Louisiana College Louisiana College Wildcats 21 14 14 13 62
  • Border Claw Trophy Battle for the Border Claw Border Claw Trophy
  • The awesomely-named Border Claw is headed back to Texas following a record-setting shootout that saw a basketball-like final score, seven TDs taking less than one minute, and a victory assured with a 2-point try failure. After an early TD and a pick-six, both with 2-point conversions, the game seemed to be all-Tigers, but a 76-yard KO return kicked off a 21-point run for the Wildcats, who kept pace with their high-scoring rival throughout the game.
  • LC seemed to finally be out of time, down 15 with six minutes remaining and facing an aggressive offense, but they scored on their penultimate possession with a 7-play, 56-yard drive that took just 1:20, forced a quick punt on ETBU's ensuing possession, and scored with a long bomb to pull within two. The Wildcats went for 2, relying on QB Easton Melancon's arm, but failed the try. The onside kick was recovered by ETBU, icing the game.
  • ETBU's records set: single-game passing yardage (530), TD passes (six), completions (39), defensive INTs (three); season TD receptions (12)
  • LC's records set: single-game TD passes (seven), TD receptions (four), yardage allowed (713)
  • Player of the Game: ETBU QB Dru Smith, 39/53, 530 yds, 6 TD, 1 INT
Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Final
Willamette Willamette Bearcats 0 20 8 7 35
Lewis & Clark Lewis & Clark Pioneers 6 0 8 7 21
  • Wagon Wheel The Wagon Wheel Wagon Wheel
  • The pain continues for L&C in their 40th-straight loss and 16th-straight Wagon Wheel loss. Willamette held the Pioneers to 91 yds rushing while snagging 475 total yds, rolling over L&C due mostly to their strong second quarter. L&C held their six-point lead for eight minutes, their second-best effort this season. There's not a lot to say about this game.
  • The Bearcats managed three TOs on defense to offset their three offensive TOs, pulling ahead and staving off a L&C comeback in the third. The two teams were evenly-matched passing, but WU held the Pioneers to 91 yards on 37 attempts on the ground while RB Taylor Wyman rushed 19 times for 164 yards.
  • I really don't know what to say about Lewis & Clark. They played one of the best games of the season and, despite three TOs, had WU pretty close. The Pioneers haven't won a game since 2013. Someday, they will, and it'll take a game like this without the TOs for that to happen, but for now it's looking like a third-straight winless season.
  • Player of the Game: WU RB Taylor Wyman, 19 att, 164 yds, 2 TD
Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Final
Whittier Whittier Poets 7 17 7 7 38
Occidental Occidental Tigers 13 15 21 7 56
  • Myron Claxton's Shoes "The Shoes" Myron Claxton's Shoes
  • For the first time this season, Oxy has walked off the field winners, putting up a season-high 56 points in one of their worst seasons in recent memory. They retain The Shoes in one of the most lopsided, counter-intuitive TOP deficits I've seen, as Whittier possessed the ball for 41 minutes of the game. For Whittier, this is a continuation of last year's misery, as they've yet to win a game since Oct. 18, 2014.
  • Whittier is similar to L&C above in that there's not a lot to say about a winless team. They had a solid comeback try headed into halftime but couldn't hold off the Tigers after the half; however, this is the highest-scoring game for the Poets this year as well as their highest yardage output. Ultimately, four TOs eliminated any shot at a win.
  • This is a single highlight in a unusually bad season for Oxy, but they've lost three games by a single possession and haven't closed out games they've led late. This is a step in the right direction but it's almost certainly too little, too late.
